Vendor Evaluation Conversion effort

A new tool could have significant piece of Data conversion and historical snapshots. Conversion typically ends up on critical path.

For a Data Warehouse initiative, this includes the changes needing to be done in the design of the source systems and extracting, transforming and Loading the historical data. Every Vendor has a different methodology, set of tools and expertise to make it happen. Different vendors can give a very different view of the conversion effort.

The scope and effort of conversion

The scope and effort of conversion needed given the tool offered by the vendor. If Vendor has an efficient data profiler + ETL tool, it may do many jobs which in case of another vendor could take significant manual effort.

Risk of conversion

How reliable can be the conversion. For Example: A ‘lesser choice’ Vendor conversion methodology could involve multi-stage Extraction and transformation routines, and Vendor has a limited capability to undertake quality checks. A ‘better choice’ Vendor may have mostly automated conversion capabilities with reliable validation methods. The above is only an Example. The automated conversion may not always be most reliable. Therefore one has to operate within your own context.
