GoldenGate Software Inc., a provider of high availability and real-time data
integration solutions, announced the results of a recent survey, "Live
Reporting in the Emerging Real-Time Enterprise," produced by Unisphere
Research in cooperation with GoldenGate Software and the Oracle Applications
Users Group (OAUG). The results point to a growing demand for companies to report
on data coming out of their applications in real-time - a matter of seconds
- not weeks or even hours.
The highlights are:
- More than a third of organizations surveyed require reporting of some data
on a real-time or "live" basis.
- As Data Warehouse is a end of the day processing, it typically gives the
data on "Daily Cycle". Therefore to get more real time data one
has to run a report on the production system which generates performance issues.
60% users reported performance degradation for these reports.
- 53 percent of respondents agreeing they cannot work with data that is more
than one hour old for their key applications.
DIPM INstitue.com comments on the above finding are as follows:
- We feel that we need to question the need for real-time reports. We don’t
say the real time reports are not required. However the real need is typically
a fraction of the order put across by business.
- For the real-time reports (if needed), one should have more super-set approach
(make a large report containing most of the current and fore-seeable requirements)
to avoid frequent changes to the report.
- With real-time reporting requirements not expected to change every day,
one can establish methods for these specific requirements. You can create
a staging database which extracts information more frequently on selective
basis for these reports.
- As a note of caution- These real-time reports should not be compared with
the enterprise reports coming out the Data Warehouse. These real time reports
should be purely for the operational use and should be dispensible at the
end of the day.
