The concept of Business Intelligence Competency centre states that we need to have a centrally managed natural team of highly diverse skills, to enable business intelligence. Unlike a typical transaction based system, a project team is formed with the start of the project and dismantled once the project is accomplished. In case of business intelligence, it’s an ongoing journey and one needs to maintain a continuity and management of skills and knowledge. In no other area one needs to have a greater familiarity of the organization environment as that in managing data and information.

BICC is a permanent organization and it includes representative from business, IT and Operations. It has people ranging from senior architecture, analysts, domain experts down to developers and report designers.

Based on a recent survey performed by BetterManagement.com, organizations with a BI Competency Center see the following benefits:
• Increased usage of business intelligence (74 percent).

• Increased business user satisfaction (48 percent).

• Better understanding of the value of BI (45 percent).

• Increased decision-making speed (45 percent).

• Decreased staff costs (26 percent).

• Decreased software costs (24 percent).
