When is External Information Assessment Report used for Strategic Planning?
Please refer to Information
Gathering & Assessment in Creating
Strategy Blueprint phase for context of this template.
This template is used during and
after the work on information gathering on external environment
is going on. As strategy is an ongoing process of re-thinking and
adapting to new external and internal factors, this report becomes
a dynamic document. This report along with the Internal Information Assessment Report
completes the picture
for what information we should consider while formulating the strategy.
Why is it used?
This works like an independent and
dispassionate platform for sharing the information, interpreting
it and also doing an impact analysis on the organization. One of
the issues which any strategy faces is that many a times information
is presented (or twisted) to suit the gut-feel strategy. By having
a separate report, one can to a certain extent 'try' to make this
a less influenced assessment.
it is also the fact that there are
many a times no right or wrong answer to the assessment of information.
One has to take a best guess. This report tries to maintain a balance
between hard and soft assessments.
How is it used?
The template becomes a reference
point as one gets on to gather information. The information gathering
has to be given a context/direction/scope. Post that, the methodology
and tricks to get the external information is also discussed to
make sure that maximum effort is spent on areas which are most important.
Post initiation of information gathering exercise, one can start
filling-up this template as living document.
