Dimensional Modeling- Dimensions & Attribute listing

This template is used during dimensional modeling. Dimensional tables and Fact table combine to make a dimensional model schema. Dimensions and attributes form the dimensional tables. The attributes also include the business hierarchies (refer section OLAP/Analysis).

When is Dimensions & Attribute listing used?

Please refer to Data Marts+ Dimensions + facts matrix stage in Data Warehouse Dimensional Modeling Process for the context of this template.

This template is used during dimensional model phase. After a provisional list of data marts have been lined out and we know the fact table grains, its time to now set-up Foundation dimension and their attributes. This one exercise has to be done keeping in mind at least the medium term application of the dimension. The attributes also include the business hierarchies.

Why is it used?

This is a single point capture of attributes, their domains and the business hierarchies in the dimension.

What it contains?

It contains the dimension code, name, sample values AND attribute code, name, samples values and parent/child relationship for business hierarchies.
