Dimensional Model to source system mapping

After all elements 'within' a Dimensional model have been mapped with each other, it is time to map all elements with in a dimensional model to the source systems they may come from. This mapping is at a high level.

When is Dimensional Model to source system mapping used?

Please refer to High Level Source to Target Schema in Data Warehouse Dimensional Modeling Process for the context.

This template related to second-last activity in the dimensional modeling phase. After all the dimensions, attributes and Facts are detailed out, they are mapped to the system from which the data to populate them will be extracted.

Why is it used?

This high level mapping is pre-cursor to detailed mapping during the Data Warehouse Design & Architecture phase. At this stage, it helps in validating the feasibility and efforts of Extraction & Transformation.

What it contains?

This template contains the code, name and description of attribute/fact and Source Systems code, name and description. This mapping does not go down to field level in source systems.
