Performance Review Session is last place to know the action-status

One need not wait for performance review session to know the status of key actions, which were agreed in the last review. A pro-active sharing of status will drive better execution and save crucial time of the review session.

This is a typical scenario- during a performance review session, one comes to know that action which was to be done a week before, has not been done. An explanation is given, a new date is agreed and the matter is closed till the next review session.

Sometimes, the person who is responsible for the session, starts thinking about it just before the performance review. The importance of tracking all agreed actions cannot be overstated. Performance review session is the last place to realize that an action has not been done by the given date. One needs to create a mechanism by which the member responsible should be circulating the status on agreed check-points as well as on the completion date.

There are multiple ways to manage this mechanism:

  • A central role (like performance review manager), can do a continuous follow-up on the actions list and distribute the status.
  • The person responsible for delivery should pro-actively circulate the status.
  • The manager maintains a list and does the follow-up as per the dates.
  • A person share the status in case there is a risk to the completion or it needs a re-visit. If no status is circulated, one can assume that action is completed.

This approach helps:

  • To stay active around completion of the actions
  • Make generating scorecard more efficient
  • To propel the supporting functions to work with the person responsible to make it happen.
  • To save crucial time of the performance review sessions
