Data Quality is a subject of business ownership and not of IT-ownership

Data is a business resource and therefore should be owned by business. IT is a strategic support function, but data has to be owned by business, like any other business asset.

This page of 'Principles and Rules' is linked to:  Data Quality,

Following are the key reasons that Data Quality should be owned by business:

  • It's a business asset.
  • Data not only resides in IT systems. A significant part of it resides in the non-IT world and is sometimes equally important.
  • Many a times, it's the business process and manual data handling, which governs the input data quality into an IT system.
  • Many a times, it's the business process and manually data handling, which governs the final quality of data, as it reaches the end customer.

IT decisions and process have also got a huge role to play in the data quality, and a CIO is always on the hook. However, IT investments are signed off by business, and a sense of business ownership of data quality, drives the investment decisions. At the same time, one has to educate the business on "cost of quality".
