Business Intelligence competency groups should be well-linked with business
As business intelligence team grow in size and responsibility, it tend to become a department within itself, with a group heavy weight "know it all" business analysts, architects and data managers. Overtime they tend to loose touch with business.

Business intelligence competency centre (BICC) in short is a competency function. It is different from the typical BI project team in the following ways:

  • It is not created to meet the needs of a specific project. It is a sustained function, which fulfills the role of BI strategy, BI project delivery, BI Change Management, BI support, BI best practices etc..
  • It has defined roles which are quite diverse, and include IT, Process and business domain expertise.

We need to avoid a situation where BICC gets de-linked from business. The risk of this happening is because BICC has holistic skills and become power centre in itself. Business Intelligence needs to have an ongoing and continuously refreshed business perspective in this fast changing world. One will agree that the information requirements change faster than the business requirements around transactional systems. As mentioned before, Business Intelligence is a business challenge and not that much of a technology challenge. The technology has gone far ahead (in case of Business Intelligence), then the capability of business to use it. Therefore an isolated business intelligence function should be avoided.
