Scalability Technical Evaluation |
A tool or a platform should be able to scale-up efficiently, economically, granularly and transparently.
|
|
This is the ability of an application to be able to operate from a small scale to enterprise wide usage. Scalability has the following considerations:
- What is the minimum and maximum limit within which the application can operate?
- What is the granularity by which you can scale-up? A low granularity means that you can gradually scale-up in small steps.
- What is the cost attached to that scalability? Does it mean that beyond a certain point, scalability could mean significant additional investment? Ideally per unit of processing cost should come down at higher scales.
- What are the performance benchmarks at higher scales? Ideally you would like to have the same operating standards as at lower scales.
- Sometimes scalability figures assume certain environments and configurations. Re-check on if the same applies on your environment.
- What are various facets of scalability? Your requirements of scalability may be one OR combination of these facets:
o The size the database.
o Number of queries/transactions.
o Number of users.
