A mentoring program is part of the Talent Development Program and is administered to the participants, although it is not mandatory for all. In this program, an employee in the talent development program is paired up with a senior employee with substantial experience, domain expertise and demonstrated leadership competencies, who coaches and guides him/her to achieve a pre-defined set of goals. The coaching and interaction protocol is also pre-defined and goals are set so as to be quantifiably measured as far as possible with defined success criteria. The progress on the program is measured on pre-decided intervals as per the agreed protocol. Mentoring program provides another channel for talent development in a way that broadens the exposure level of the employee. The mentoring program is an important tool in developing the succession pipeline and developing future leaders. Although it is primarily aimed at the mentees, who gain from the mentor’s guidance experience, the learning process often works both ways with the mentors too picking up valuable insights of the current ground level issues and the different individual perspectives involved. They also serve as an informal bridge between the two layers which allow for two-way knowledge transfer. Mentoring program is generally a high-profile program of the HR department which contributes significantly to the increase in execution effectiveness and performance excellence of the mentees. This is a broader learning and development agenda which forms part of the overall management planning. |
