The need for perfection may be true in certain cases but not for all .A business customer will always look for perfection till he/she is told of its cost. This is a universal observation. A Data Quality program needs strong business domain expertise to firstly discuss & assess the impact of imperfect quality. Secondly it is needed for finding the most optimum solutions & work-arounds to ensure that we are getting best benefit to cost equation.
The suggested approach is:
- Develop a fact based assessment on current state of data quality.
- Apart from asking the business the level of quality needed, one can ask for the key data quality issues, which the business has. (refer Data Quality is not Perfect)
- You can do some broad calculations on the possible solution and their cost.
- You approach business to share with them the cost for resolving their issues, and achieving various levels of data quality.
Business will be able to respond with a greater sense of reality and practicality once they have some information to review. Any data management initiative, will have a risk of unqualified business input, if you don't approach business with a home-work and scenarios. |
