CHAPTER -

Imperatives of Enterprise Intelligence
This chapter shares on all what is needed to build a robust, real-time and flexible sensory system. This includes data quality assurance, consistent way to define the business, consistent information needs, mother-reports, business ownership of information, Universalization of information and filter less information.

Topics
Data Quality Assurance
Data Quality Assurance** is much more a business subject, than it being an IT subject. It includes interface quality assurance, data capture controls, business process discipline, business partner data control, data domain management and entity-relationship controls.

Consistent way to define our business
Business processes, entities and business metrics need a common definition and understanding across the enterprise. This common business definition should be the reference point for all manual or automated systems.

Consistent and Meaningful Information Needs
The performance scorecards for an enterprise represent the fingerprints of the management style of a company. What, when and how-much information is needed has to have a purpose. The information consumer should not only state what is needed, but also why is it needed?, how the information will be used?, and in case of the reported exceptions, what actions are expected to be taken?

'Mother' MIS-Reports
Organizations are riddled with hundred of reports leading to information overload. All the day-to-day information needs of a user should be ideally met through one to two mother reports. This not only keep the number of reports manageable, it also reduces the chances of data mismatch across the reports.

Enterprise Level Data and Information Management
Data & information has to be an enterprise asset. Enterprise intelligence will be best served if it is driven by the management team. There should be central guidelines in terms of structure of customer data, data control mechanisms, universal models in which data will be stored. In terms of information, it is advised to have a central information management team. This team should work on common and consistent business definition and reporting logics. It should work on eliminating the mis-matches across reports.

Business Ownership of Information
Enterprise information and intelligence is essentially a business subject, with IT playing the role of platform provider. Just like any IT platform, the needs, rules, configuration, operation and usage of output has to be decided by business. Most of the enterprise intelligence initiatives fail, not due to IT, but organization's capacity to use IT.
