CHAPTER -  Execution Management - An Overview

Before one gets into the details of execution management process, one needs to understand on what is execution management, its success drivers, its link with organization readiness and why Strategic Execution Management is an ignored subject.

Topics
Components of Execution Scorecard
Execution Scorecard is not only a type of performance management report. It's a holistic capacity of how an organization decides what is important to run its business, how it establishes the measurement mechanism, how it reports on these measurements, and how it responds to the exceptions.

Traditional vs. Holistic View of Execution Management
It will be of good help, if you go through the introductory section of Discipline of Execution-Making it Happen, as it provides a detailed perspective on this subject. This page provides a high-level view of how Execution differs from Performance. A traditional view is that performance is synonymous with Execution. The objective of this topic is to de-mystify the difference between the two. Performance Management typically focuses on the performance vis-à-vis a set of goals and metrics, and it generally numbers driven. In the recent past there has been emerging thinking about having more pro-active performance management in terms of leading indicators. Execution Management, not only looks at performance, it also works on various other aspects like capability management, business assumptions management, customer & competition tracking, etc.....

Performance Scorecard vs. Execution Scorecard
The difference between performance scorecard and execution scorecard is same as the one between Performance Management and Execution Management. Performance Management typically takes an important but limited view of what an organization needs to do for a successful execution. A performance scorecard focuses on performance given the reference of the business plan. Execution scorecard has the performance scorecard as one of the components. It also includes capability scorecard, assumptions tracking, competition tracking, customer scorecard and much more.

Organization Readiness for Execution Scorecard
The readiness for adopting Execution Scorecard falls into multiple dimensions. Execution Scorecard is not a report, but an end-to-end mind-set and capability for an organization to define what it wants to track & measure, how it wants to do it, what is the level transparency and flow of information, they are comfortable with, how much they want to openly discuss the brutal reality of business, etc......
